In an election held just two days after the assassination of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP)-Komeito coalition secured 76 seats and retained the majority in the Upper House elections, local media reported.

Abe was gunned down in Nara city in western Japan on Friday, while he was delivering a campaign speech.

The Supreme Court on Monday sentenced fugitive businessman Vijay Malya to four months in jail and fined him Rs 2,000 for contempt in connection with cases filed after he failed to repay debt owed to lenders led by State Bank of India.

The court asked directed Mallya and his son Siddharth to pay back $40 million with 8 per cent interest for repayment of the loan. Mallya’s properties will be attached if he fails to make the payment.

At least 16 people have been killed while 15,000 pilgrims, who were stranded near the Amarnath holy cave in Jammu and Kashmir due to a flash flood triggered by a cloudburst, have been shifted to the lower base camp of Panjtarni, officials said Saturday.

A Border Security Force spokesperson in Delhi said "16 bodies have been shifted to Baltal."
