Coal India gains 4%, hits over 2-year high on hopes of strong earnings

Shares of Coal India (CIL) hit an over two-year high of Rs 205.55, up 4 per cent on the BSE in Wednesday’s intra-day trade, surging as much as 10 per cent in the past three trading days on expectation of strong earnings.

The stock of state-owned mining company traded at its highest level since January 2020. In past three months, the stock has rallied 25 per cent, as compared to a 5.4 per cent decline in the S&P BSE Sensex.

Market regulator the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) on Tuesday imposed a penalty of Rs 24 crore on nine entities including Malvinder Mohan Singh and Shivinder Mohan Singh for irregularities at Fortis Healthcare.

The market regulator fined the Singh brothers Rs 5 crore each while their associate company RHC Holdings was fined Rs 2.5 crore. Sebi also banned Malvinder Singh and Shivinder Singh from accessing securities market for a period of three years.

Japan's health ministry on Tuesday formally approved Novavax's COVID-19 vaccine, a fourth foreign-developed tool to combat the infections as the country sees signs of a resurgence led by a subvariant of fast-spreading omicron.

The ministry approval comes the day after its experts panel endorsed use of Novavax's protein vaccine, which is designed with similar technology used to fight diseases such as the flu and hepatitis B, for the first two shots and a booster.

With 1,247 coronavirus infections being reported in a day, India's total tally of COVID-19 cases rose to 4,30,45,527, while the active cases increased to 11,860, according to the Union Health Ministry data updated on Tuesday.

The death toll climbed to 5,21,966 with one fresh fatality being reported from Uttar Pradesh, the data updated at 8 am stated.

At 10:51 am; the stock was down 15 per cent at Rs 918, as compared to 0.03 per cent decline in the S&P BSE Sensex. It had hit a 52-week high of Rs 1,887 on October 18, 2021.

Shares of sugar companies rallied up to 9 per cent on the BSE in Tuesday’s intra-day trade in an otherwise subdued market. The sweet rally is backed by expectation of strong operational performance, favourable mix of ethanol towards B-heavy/juice (feedstock), and higher sugar realizations.

Shares of Mawana Sugars, Dhampur Sugar Mills, Triveni Engineering & Industries, Balrampur Chini Mills, Dalmia Bharat Sugar and Industries and Dwarikesh Sugar Industries were up between 3 per cent and 9 per cent on the BSE.

The White House has announced that the United States will co-host the second global COVID-19 summit virtually on May 12 to continue the international effort in the fight against pandemic and to advance global preparedness.

The global coronavirus caseload has topped 504.9 million, while the deaths have surged to more than 6.19 million and vaccinations to over 11.18 billion, according to Johns Hopkins University.

In its latest update on Tuesday morning, the University's Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) revealed that the current global caseload and the death toll stood at 504,990,510 and 6,199,732 respectively, while the total number of vaccine doses administered increased to 11,181,442,274.

Shares of AU Small Finance Bank hit a record high of Rs 1,441, gaining 4 per cent on the BSE in Tuesday’s intra-day in an otherwise subdued market after the private sector lender said the bank’s board will meet next week to consider bonus issue proposal. The stock surpassed its previous high of Rs 1,428 touched on April 13, 2022.

“A meeting of the board of directors of the Bank will be held on Monday, 25 th April, 2022 and will continue on Tuesday, 26th April, 2022 to consider the proposal for issuance of bonus shares, subject to requisite approvals,” AU Small Finance Bank said in an exchange filing.

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) has said that by cancelling the bail of the main accused in the Lakhimpur Kheri murder case, Ashish Mishra alias Monu, the Supreme Court has restored hope in the justice system.

Earlier in the day, the apex court had cancelled the bail of Mishra in connection with the October 2021 incident at Lakhimpur Kheri in Uttar Pradesh wherein a vehicle allegedly belonging to him had mowed down several people including protesting farmers.
