The Supreme Court (SC) on Monday directed the Centre and Goods and Services Tax (GST) department to file their response within two weeks to the pleas by online gaming companies challenging the 28 per cent GST on all forms of online real-money gaming.
The bench, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, issued notice in pleas by online gaming companies such as Head Digital Works, Games 24/7, and Dream 11 challenging the government's decision to retrospectively impose the tax on the full value of the online bets placed, not on the gross gaming revenue.

Sony Group Corp is planning to call off its merger with Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd, Bloomberg reported on Monday, citing people aware of the matter. The Japanese conglomerate is likely to send the termination letter to ZEEL before January 20.
The Bloomberg report said that Sony is planning to cancel the deal owing to the standoff over who will lead the merged entity. There has been confusion over whether Zee's chief executive officer, Punit Goenka, also its founder's son, will lead the company or not. Sony reportedly does not want Goenka to lead the merged entity amid a regulatory probe.

Diversified conglomerate Adani Group has committed investments to the tune of Rs 42,700 crore in Tamil Nadu across various sectors on the second day of the Global Investors Meet 2024 held here on Monday.
At the valedicatory session of the event organised by the ruling DMK government, memorandum of understandings between the Adani Group and the state government were signed in the presence of Chief Minister M K Stalin, Minister for Industries TRB Rajaa, Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone, Managing Director, Karan Adani.

Adani Group-owned ACC Ltd on Monday announced that it will acquire the remaining 55 per cent stake in the cement manufacturer Asian Concretes and Cements Pvt Ltd (ACCPL) at an enterprise value of Rs 775 crore. It currently owns 45 per cent of the company. The acquisition will be funded through internal accruals.
The cost of acquisition will be Rs 425.96 crore for 55 per cent equity.

Supreme Court on Monday quashed the remission of 11 convicts in the Bikis Bano gangrape case and the murder of her family members, by the Gujarat government. It stated that it was not under the territory of Gujarat that the sentence was passed and the accused were convicted.
The bench of Justices B V Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan said that the trial was transferred to the state of Maharashtra from Gujarat and it makes the Maharashtra government as the "appropriate government". This reverses the order passed by the Gujarat government.

Flipkart, owned by Walmart, has commenced a workforce reduction initiative that could lead to a five to seven per cent decrease in its total team, according to a report by The Economic Times (ET). This move is part of the company's annual performance-based job reductions, which have been in effect for the past two years. The process is expected to be completed by March-April, coinciding with the ongoing performance reviews and the end of the ongoing financial year.
The e-commerce giant, with 22,000 employees (excluding Myntra), has been actively managing costs, including freezing fresh hiring over the past year.

Thousands of farmers will descend on the national capital on February 13 to press for several demands that include the guaranteed Minimum Support Price (MSP) based on the C2+50 per cent formula and an increase in the import duties on agricultural products.
C2+50 per cent is a formula to determine the MSP, which is fixed at 50 per cent over the Comprehensive Cost of Production favoured by Dr Swaminathan.

Tata Power Company is all set to invest a whopping Rs 70,000 crore for 10 giga watt (Gw) solar and wind units in Tamil Nadu over a period of five-seven years.
If the investment fructifies, it may well be the largest single investment by Tata Power in any state.

Shares of Fiem Industries hit a new high at Rs 2,441.80, as they zoomed 15 per cent on the BSE in Monday’s intra-day trade after the company said its board will meet on January 15 to consider bonus issue.
In an exchange filing, Fiem Industries said the meeting of the board of directors is scheduled on 15/01/2024, inter alia, to consider and approve /recommend issuance of bonus shares, subject to approval of the shareholders of the company.

India has recorded a single-day rise of 774 COVID-19 cases while the number of active cases stands at 4,187, the Union health ministry said on Saturday.
Two deaths -- one each from Tamil Nadu and Gujarat -- were reported in a span of 24 hours, according to the ministry's data updated at 8 am.
