Govt plans Rs 2 lakh-cr solar and wind power projects in deserts

With depleting fossil fuel reserves and environmental concerns surrounding conventional power generation, the government has started work on a long-term plan to tap into India's solar and wind potential lying unexplored in its deserts. The plan could entail an investment of over Rs 2 lakh crore by 2022.

The idea is to set up renewable energy generation capacity, including both solar and wind, along with the associated evacuation infrastructure, at a mega scale in the four Indian deserts - Thar in Rajasthan, Rann of Kutch in Gujarat, Lahul & Spiti in Himachal Pradesh and Ladakh in Jammu & Kashmir.

Railways completes pilot project for semi-high-speed train

The first pilot project of the Indian Railways to run trains at a maximum speed of 160 km/hr was completed successfully on Thursday morning on the Delhi-Agra route.

The train covered the distance of 200 km in 90 minutes, compared to the earlier 120 minutes. This makes up for a commercial speed of about 133 km/hr compared with the average speed of 90-100km/hr for Rajdhani trains.

Manipulation by vested interests to create an artificial shortage of food items is expected to figure prominently at the day-long meeting of state food ministers convened by the Centre on Friday.

According to officials, the meeting is to be chaired by Finance Minister Arun Jaitely and presided over by both Food Minister Ram Vilas Paswan and Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan Singh. In a rare case of investor activism on managerial remuneration, shareholders of Tata Motors, India's biggest automotive maker, rejected compensation payment in excess of prescribed limits to three directors.

The company did not get the required 75 per cent votes in a postal ballot to compensate Executive Director (commercial vehicles) Ravindra Pisharody, Executive Director (quality) Satish Borwankar and the legal heir of former managing director Karl Slym (who died in January) in excess of the limits for the year ended March.

Since the launch of Jupiter in September, monthly scooter sales have increased by more than one-fourth. According to TVS Motor’s latest annual report, scooters as a category is gaining share from motorcycles. “Category shift from motorcycles to scooters continued in 2013-14 also, bringing more male buyers into the category,” TVS said.

Mumbai: After declining for 33 consecutive months, sales of medium and heavy-duty trucks picked up in June, as an improvement in the mining sector and a pick-up in manufacturing led to some revival in demand for commercial vehicles.

With the exception of Tata Motors Ltd, the market leader in the commercial vehicles, sales at most firms, including Ashok Leyland Ltd, Eicher Motors Ltd, Volvo Eicher Commercial Vehicles Ltd and Mahindra Trucks and Buses Ltd, saw a spike.

Indian rupee up 16 paise against US dollar

The Indian rupee edged higher by 16 paise to over two-week high of 59.53 against the US dollar at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market today on increased selling of the US currency by exporters amid capital inflows.

Forex dealers said a higher opening in the domestic equity market and strengthening of the euro against the US dollar overseas also supported the rupee.
