India dials WTO members for food security support

India is engaged with several countries to garner support on the food security issue at the World Trade Organization, with an aim to conclude the Bali package.

With the month-long vacation over, the work at the WTO has resumed and its Director General Roberto Azevedo has been meeting with member nations to cobble support. “We are talking to few countries…a good number of countries,” Rajeev Kher, commerce secretary, told reporters here when asked whether India is engaging with other WTO members to gather support on its tough stand of not ratifying trade facilitation agreement (TFA), leading to failure of talks in Geneva in July.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) is preparing the ground for the launch of municipal bonds, a popular debt instrument issued by local governments globally.

Sources said Sebi planned to float a discussion paper on the issuance and trading of municipal bonds, popularly called muni bonds. To ensure this is a viable proposition, the regulator is in talks with the finance ministry to ease the norms on pricing such bonds.

Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), India’s largest information technology services provider, on Wednesday announced its board of directors had re-appointed N Chandrasekaran as the chief executive officer and managing director (CEO & MD) for five years. This is effective October 6 and is subject to necessary approval of shareholders.

Earlier, Chandrasekaran was appointed CEO & MD for a period of five years from October 6, 2009 to October 05, 2014.

The Punjab and Haryana High Court on Wednesday set aside the Haryana government’s decision to allot 350 acres of land in Wazirabad, Gurgaon, to the country’s largest real estate developer DLF in 2010.

This the second blow to DLF in the past week. The Supreme Court had on August 27 directed the company to deposit Rs 630 crore in its registry within three months, rejecting its request to stay the order of the Competition Commission of India (CCI) that had imposed the penalty over unfair trade practices.

Supreme Court reworks norms for death penalty cases

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday introduced radical changes to the rules governing the hearing of appeals in death sentence cases, effectively restricting the death sentence to the rarest of rare cases.

Not only did the five-judge constitution bench rule that in future all appeals would be heard by a three-judge bench, as opposed to the current practice of a two-judge bench, it also laid down that the hearings will take place in an open court, doing away with the current practice of hearings taking place in the judges’ chambers.

Hyderabad: Larsen and Toubro Ltd (L&T), which is building the Rs.16,375 crore Hyderabad Metro Rail project, said on Tuesday it is facing a cost overrun of as much as Rs.3,000 crore on account of high interest cost and delays in execution.

“The project is at a critical stage,” said V.B. Gadgil, chief executive and managing director of L&T Hyderabad Metro Rail Pvt. Ltd, the unit that’s executing the metro rail project.
