Mobile banking may overtake internet transactions by next year: HDFC Bank

HDFC Bank, the country’s second-largest private sector lender, has upped the focus on mobile banking transactions in the past few months as part of its strategy to transform itself into a digital bank. Now, the lender believes mobile banking will overtake internet banking by next year.

“Usage of mobiles has been growing rapidly and outpacing the growth of the internet transactions. We feel next by year it will overtake internet banking,” said Nitin Chugh, head-digital banking, HDFC Bank.

The Jan Suraksha scheme has witnessed over 100 million enrolments in about two months in its life and accident insurance segments.

As on July 1, banks enrolled about 104 million account holders in the Pradhan Mantri Jeevan Jyoti Bima Yojana (PMJJBY) and the Pradhan Mantri Suraksha Bima Yojana (PMSBY). State Bank of India (SBI) and Punjab National Bank (PNB) led the enrolments with 20 million and 7.8 million, respectively.

Europe's Airbus Group and the Mahindra Group have struck a deal to build helicopters jointly as they bid to win an expected wave of orders from the country's armed forces, the companies said in a statement on Friday.

State-run refiner Hindustan Petroleum Corporation is planning to raise $200 million (Rs 1,260 crore) by this August, which would be used for its expansion, a company official and a banker confirmed.

“The funds would be used for our ongoing capital expenditure programme. We would also be using the funds to finance our ongoing four pipeline projects,” said the HPCL official.
