Weekly review: Sensex, Nifty gain 0.4%; realty stocks perform well

The key benchmark indices BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty gained around 0.4 per cent to 28,236.39 and 8,564.60 respectively for the week ended August 8, 2015. The BSE Sensex and NSE Nifty were at 28,114.56 and 8,532.85 on July 31(last week). Market experts believe domestic equity markets are likely to remain volatile in coming weeks.

Between July 31 and August 7, the BSE Realty index gained 3.59 per cent at 1,437.20. It was followed by the BSE Auto index (up 3.44 per cent at 19765.17), BSE Consumer Durables index (up 2.95 per cent at Rs 11413.47) and BSE Healthcare index (up 2.78 per cent at Rs 17,521.15). The BSE Power index remained flat at 2,064.21.

Global electronic manufacturing giant Foxconn today announced it will invest USD five billion over the next five years in Maharashtra, which has given the Taiwan-based company 1,500 acres of land for its plant.

Foxconn Chairman Terry Gou said the facility in Maharashtra will focus on research and development as well as manufacturing, and the company has chosen the state for being a financial centre, availability of quality talent and software-hardware integration facilities.

Four persons including three members of a family were feared dead as flash floods triggered by a cloudburst wrecked havoc in Dharampur area of Mandi district, 250 km from Shimla, this morning, inundating vast areas, washing away vehicles and perishing several heads of cattle.

Three members of a family were feared to have been buried alive after their house collapsed due to a landslide while a sadhu was washed away in the gushing water of swollen Son Khud, a tributary of Beas river, police said.

SEBI yet to publish list of 'benami' ponzy scheme companies

Corporate Affairs Minister Arun Jaitley has informed Parliament that the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) has not published any list of more than 100 benami, bogus ponzy scheme companies.

He said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha that chit funds are regulated under the Chit Funds Act, 1982 and require previous sanction of the state governments. He also said that the Prize Chit and Money Circulation (Banning) Act, 1978 bans prize chits and money circulation activities is enforced by state governments.

Mumbai: India’s biggest engineering and construction company Larsen and Toubro Ltd (L&T) will monetize assets from time to time and “selectively bid for value-accretive projects in the roads and transmission line businesses”, said group executive chairman A.M. Naik in the company’s annual report for fiscal 2015.

Naik said L&T intends to unlock value of its information technology (IT) and technology services business.

Mumbai: Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd (M&M) reported a 3.35% drop in net profit for the first quarter of the current fiscal year on a fall in sales, but still managed to beat analyst expectations.

Stand-alone net profit fell to Rs.852.20 crore in the June quarter as compared with Rs.881.78 crore a year ago. Net sales fell 3% to Rs.9,708.05 crore as compared with Rs.10,006.85 crore. A Bloomberg poll of 27 analysts estimated net profit at Rs.741.1 crore and net sales of Rs.9,831.8 crore.

State-owned Bharat Heavy Electricals reported a 82.5 per cent plunge in standalone net profit to Rs 34 crore for the April-June quarter of 2015-16. It attributed the decrease in profit to lower sales.The net sales declined 15.5 per cent to Rs 4,281 crore in the June quarter from Rs 5,068 crore during the same period last year.

Tata Motors Q1 profit drops 49% to Rs 2,769 crore

India’s largest automobile maker, Tata Motors, said its net profit for the April-June period dropped 49 per cent to Rs 2,769 crore, as its retail sales for the most valuable products, Jaguar and Land Rover, plunged 33 per cent in China. The net was lesser than the average of 30 analysts’ projection of Rs 3,234 crore reported by Bloomberg. Net sales dropped six per cent to Rs 61,020 crore over the past year, trailing Bloomberg’s estimate of Rs 64,362 crore.

Government has invested Rs 4.85 lakh crore in big infrastructure projects, costing over Rs 150 crore, as of June 1 in the current fiscal.

In 2014-15, the total investment in such projects was to the tune of Rs 5.44 lakh crore; Rs 5.02 lakh crore in 2013-14 and Rs 4.48 lakh crore in 2012-13, Minister of State for Planning Rao Inderjit Singh said in a written reply to the Lok Sabha on Friday.
