New Delhi: For Indian telecom market, prepaid mobile subscribers are the driving force covering almost 95% of the total mobile subscriptions generating revenue of around 80% for the companies.

As per Bernstein analysis and Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) reports, postpaid subscribers made up only about 5% of the total users in India as of March 2016.

The Cabinet on Wednesday cleared the long-pending compensation of Rs 1,250 crore for public sector telecom company BSNL to support rural landline connections installed before April 1, 2002.

"The Cabinet approves subsidy of Rs 1,250 crore to BSNL as compensation for deficit incurred by BSNL in operating rural wire-line connections," said Frank Noronha, the government's Principal Spokesperson, on Twitter.

Coal India Ltd (CIL), which produces 84 per cent of country's coal output, "needs to step up to a double digit growth rate from that of around 9 per cent achieved during 2015-16" to meet its production targets, company Chairman Sutirtha Bhattacharya said on Wednesday.

"Going forward, in order to meet the production targets, Coal India needs to step up to a double digit growth rate from that of around 9 per cent achieved during FY 2016...during the first four months of FY 2017, Coal India's production growth was more than 6 million tonnes (mt) over the same period last year," he said while addressing shareholders at the company's 42nd Annual General Meeting.

Markets continued to trade higher in noon trades on Wednesday amid a rally in Asian stocks after the Bank of Japan at its meeting today decided to keep its deposit rate unchanged.

At 12:35pm, the S&P BSE Sensex was up 138 points at 28,661 and the Nifty50 was trading points higher at 8,818. In the broader markets, BSE Midcap and Smallcap indices gained 0.4%-0.7% each. Market breadth was positive with 1549 gainers and 872 losers on the BSE.

Markets regulator Sebi on Tuesday came out with the indicative format in its circular on the disclosures of distributors’ commission. Even board of the Association of Mutual Funds in India (Amfi) had discussed the issue of commission disclosures to distributors in consolidated account statement (CAS) from October 1, 2016.

In March, the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) had issued the circular stating that, fund houses should disclose actual commissions paid to the distributors in absolute terms during the half-year period.

Bangalore/New Delhi: Two Indian students are mounting a legal challenge to Facebook Inc., seeking to wind back changes to WhatsApp’s privacy policy that they say threatens the rights of millions of users.

Karmanya Singh Sareen and Shreya Sethi filed a public-interest litigation, akin to a class action, in the Delhi high court asking for a rollback of recent policy updates by the Facebook-owned messaging service. They asked the court to order the government to frame guidelines for messaging apps so that user privacy isn’t compromised.

State-owned refiner Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and gas utility GAIL India Ltd will tomorrow sign a pact to take 49 per cent stake in Adani Group’s Rs 5,000-crore Dhamra LNG project in Odisha.

While IOC will take 38 per cent, GAIL will pick 11 per cent stake in the proposed 5-million tonne a year liquefied natural gas (LNG) import terminal at Dhamra by 2018-19.
