Wipro sells energy biz for $70 mn to India unit of UTC

Wipro has sold off energy services business EcoEnergy to the Indian arm of United Technologies Corporation for an estimated Rs 465 crore as part of its strategy to exit noncore businesses.

Wipro said it was a strategic decision to divest from the energy business as the software major would focus on core IT services business. Both the companies signed a pact on Wednesday. In last financial year, EcoEnergy contributed nearly Rs 67.6 crore to the company’s overall revenue and its net worth was Rs 15.6 crore.

Rupee closes at one-week high against US dollar

Mumbai: The Indian rupee on Wednesday closed at a one week high against the US dollar after domestic equity markets gained for the fourth consecutive session. This was the second consecutive sessions when the rupee closed higher.

The rupee closed at 68.39 a dollar—a level last seen on 22 November, up 0.39% from its previous close of 68.66. The home currency opened at 68.68 against the US dollar and touched a high of 68.37 a dollar during intraday trading. So far this year, it has fallen 3.27%.

The Supreme Court on Wednesday ordered that the National Anthem should be played in all cinema halls across the country before the movie starts, accompanied by the national flag on screen. The apex court also stated that everyone present in the cinema hall must rise and pay respect to the national anthem. Meanwhile, the Central government has agreed to circulate the Supreme Court’s order to all States’ Chief Secretaries and to publish it on electronic and print media.

West Bengal: Army helicopter crashes in Sukna, 3 officers killed

Three army officers were killed and a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO) was critically injured on Wednesday when a Cheetah helicopter crashed at Sukna Military Base near Siliguri in West Bengal.

The crash took place around 11.45 am when the officers were on a routine mission. Just when it was about to land near the helipad inside the base, it crashed leaving the pilot and two co-pilots dead. The deceased officers are - Major Sanjeev Lathar, Major Arvind Bazala and Lt. Col Rajneesh Kumar.

Worldwide 4G smartphones are expected to show double-digit uptake at 21.3 per cent Year-on-Year growth for 2016 to reach 1.17 billion units — up from 967 million in 2015.

“We are quickly seeing this change in key growth markets like India where new operator Reliance Jio is aggressively trying to shake up the market by handing out free 4G SIM cards and launching own-branded low-cost 4G-enabled smartphones,” said Melissa Chau, Associate Research Director, IDC’s “Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Device Trackers”, in a statement.

Sebi imposes Rs 10-lakh fine on Franklin Templeton MF

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has imposed a penalty of Rs 10 lakh on Franklin Templeton Mutual Fund for forming an 'informal group' as investment committee.

The regulator has said the panel breached the MF regulations. It did an inspection during July to October 2015 and decided the committee breached a Sebi circular of 2002. Further, the committee had included an international chief investment officer (CIO), based outside India, which didn't meet with the requirements under 1996 regulations.
