MUMBAI: The benchmark BSE Sensex surged over 90 points in early trade today, extending its rally to the fourth straight session on continued buying by domestic institutional investors amid expectations of positive GDP data to be released later in the day.

The 30-share index was trading higher by 90.06 points or 0.34%, to 26,484.07 with the sectoral indices led by healthcare, consumer durables, realty, oil & gas and PSUs trading higher.

With the Reliance Jio Infocomm (Jio) giving free 4G SIM cards and launching affordable 4G-enabled smartphones to connect the next billion, India is set to lead the 4G revolution, the International Data Corporation (IDC) said on Wednesday. Worldwide 4G smartphones are expected to show double-digit uptake at 21.3 per cent Year-on-Year growth for 2016 to reach 1.17 billion units — up from 967 million in 2015.

“We are quickly seeing this change in key growth markets like India where new operator Reliance Jio is aggressively trying to shake up the market by handing out free 4G SIM cards and launching own-branded low-cost 4G-enabled smartphones,” said Melissa Chau, Associate Research Director, IDC’s “Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Device Trackers”, in a statement.

The Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi) has imposed a penalty of Rs 10 lakh on Franklin Templeton Mutual Fund for forming an 'informal group' as investment committee.

The regulator has said the panel breached the MF regulations. It did an inspection during July to October 2015 and decided the committee breached a Sebi circular of 2002. Further, the committee had included an international chief investment officer (CIO), based outside India, which didn't meet with the requirements under 1996 regulations.

Idea Cellular was up 5% to Rs 79.70 on the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in intra-day trade on reports that the Aditya Birla Group's telecom major has put on block 100% stake in its tower arm.

The Exchange has sought clarification from Idea Cellular with respect to news article appearing on Moneycontrol.com on November 29, 2016 titled "Idea Cellular plans to sell 100% in tower arm for $1 billion,” the NSE said in a statement.

State-owned Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL) has reported nearly six-fold jump in operating profit during 2015-16 at Rs 3,855 crore from Rs 672 crore in the preceding fiscal, while revenue from operation turned out to be highest in the last five years.

BSNL's revenue from operation rose 4.4 per cent to Rs 28,449 crore during financial year ended March 2016, sources told PTI citing the latest audited financial statement of the telecom corporation placed at the AGM last week.

Government on Tuesday said sufficient cash is available with Reserve Bank of India and banks, and it is not considering extending the deadline of December 30 for deposit of invalid Rs 500 and Rs 1,000 notes.

The statement was made in the Rajya Sabha even as people queued up at banks to deposit old high value notes and withdraw new cash.
