The Pune chapter of Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) and Travel Federation Association of India (TAFI) held a protest march against the national carrier, Air India, and its plans to align with only one Global Distribution Partner (GDS).

Air India had decided to use Travelport as their exclusive GDS and is giving up the rest of systems.

Mumbai: Air India has floated tender for the sale of its iconic 23-storey tower at Nariman Point in Mumbai. Only government entities are allowed to participate in the bidding for acquiring leasehold rights of the land and building on “as is where is basis.”

“Air India invites sealed bids from government entities for sale of leasehold rights of the land, and its iconic Air India building constructed hereon at Nariman Point, Mumbai, on as is where is basis,” the tender said.

Despite fiscal constraints, the Centre is likely to provide Rs 12,200 crore from the Budget — half of it this fiscal and the balance in the next year — to retire 40% of the Rs 30,000-crore working capital debt of Air India. As a precursor to this, the debt — not backed by assets — will be shifted to a special purpose vehicle (SPV).

An Air India plane carrying 179 passengers struck a building at Stockholm's Arlanda airport with its wingtip as it taxied to gate on Wednesday, but no injuries were reported, police said.

"The 179 passengers could disembark from the plane on a mobile staircase and thereafter enter the terminal," police wrote in a statement.

In a letter shot off to minister of state for civil aviation Jayant Sinha early this month, a top executive of Madrid-based information technology firm Amadeus estimated the revenue loss to travel agents of Air India to be around Rs 1,825 crore once state-owned carrier moves to a single global distribution system (GDS) for domestic flights.

Mumbai: Cash-strapped Air India Ltd expects to raise as much as $850 million (about 6,100 crore) by selling and leasing back seven wide-body aircraft over the next 15 days. Air India on Sunday grounded its chief of operations Captain AK Kathpalia after he allegedly failed to clear pre-flight alcohol test. Kathpalia was to operate the airline’s London-New Delhi flight on Sunday afternoon.

Sources said that Air India had to call another pilot to replace him and operate the flight (AI-111) which departed after a delay of 55 minutes, causing inconvenience to passengers.
