German luxury carmaker Mercedes- Benz today launched the petrol version of its premium SUV 'GLS 400 4MATIC' priced at Rs 82.90 lakh (ex-showroom Delhi).

With the launch of the new vehicle, the company said it has completed offering petrol option along with diesel variants for all the models that it sells in India.

Mercedes-Benz is planning its own distinct line of electric vehicles, challenging BMW and Tesla Motors in a bet that alternative-fuel cars have the potential to become profitable.

Mercedes will add two electric sport utility vehicles and two sedans, according to two people familiar with the plan, who asked not to be named because the details haven't been disclosed. Mercedes will create a new sub-brand for the cars, though a name hasn't been chosen yet, one of the people said. Chief Executive Officer Dieter Zetsche said in June that the company planned to unveil an electric car at the Paris motor show in September.

German luxury car maker Mercedes Benz, the largest player in its segment in the Indian market, will convert all its models to petrol from September. The decision comes in the wake of a Supreme Court decision that has banned sales of diesel cars (2,000cc and above) in the national capital region (NCR).

Roland Folger, managing director and chief executive officer, Mercedes Benz India, said that of the nine models that are locally manufactured, six are now available in petrol.

Mercedes is the most impacted luxury car maker after the Supreme Court in December last year imposed a ban on sales of diesel cars with an engine capacity of 2,000 cc and above in the National Capital Region. All its models came under this category and impacted the German car maker's sales in its biggest market in the country.

Franfurt: Daimler said it will spend €3 billion ($3.35 billion) to curtail diesel exhaust pollution levels by modifying its engines and exhaust treatment systems including through a software update for some Mercedes-Benz passenger cars.

The €3 billion includes a €2.6 billion ($2.91 billion) investment announced in February.

Chakan, May 22: Mercedes-Benz India is planning to focus on sports-utility vehicles (SUV) to maintain its growth momentum.

The company, which registered a 21 per cent growth in sales at 13,589 units in 2015-16, had the largest share in the luxury car segment and is betting big on SUVs to bolster its position. "Our NGCCs (new-generation compact cars) were the volume driver last year. This year, it's going to be our SUVs. We have a phenomenal line-up with two more to come this year," managing director and CEO Roland Folger said.

German luxury carmaker Mercedes-Benz today launched an upgraded version of its seven-seater sports utility vehicle GLS 350d in India, priced at Rs 80.4 lakh (ex-showroom Pune).

"India has growing penchant for SUVs and at 100% growth achieved in 2015, it was the highest growing segment for us," Mercedes-Benz Managing Director and CEO Roland Folger told reporters here.

Mercedes Benz has written to the road transport ministry to convery its ability to supply vehicles that can run on clean fuels like bio-diesel and ethanol.

Road transport minister Nitin Gadkari on Wednesday said the company has written to him informing of its ability to supply all forms of vehicles which can run on environmentally less polluting forms of fuels. He also said that the government will begin work on planting trees along national highways under the Green Highways (Plantation, Transplantation, Beautification and Maintenence) Policy, 2015.
