Tech titan Apple has informed telecom regulator Trai that the new version of its operating system includes a feature that would allow users to report unwanted messages and calls as spam, sources said.

The issue of reporting unsolicited telemarketing calls and messages has been a major bone of contention between the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) and the US-based company.

Amid a disquiet in the industry over new unsolicited commercial communication norms, TRAI has asserted that it operated within its mandate to tighten rules for curbing pesky calls and messages, a menace which goes beyond harassment into the realm of defrauding customers.

NEW DELHI: Mobile industry body COAI today raised red flag over Trai's new rules on curbing pesky calls and messages saying tailoring of systems, and use of blockchain technology will involve Rs 200-400 crore investment and 18 months for the roll out, at a time when the sector is financially-stressed.

Signalling a quantum leap in mobile technology, the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) on Wednesday gave its recommendations for the auction of eight bands, including the fifth generation (5G) ultra high speed telephony. 5G auction, a first for India, is expected to be a catalyst for internet of things (IoT) innovations that would speed up machine learning and artificial intelligence. Airwaves worth around Rs 5.06 trillion will be on offer for telecom operators in the next round of auction.

Days after TRAI chief's Aadhaar dare created a flutter, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) today asked people not to share publicly their 12-digit identifier on Internet and social media, or pose such challenges to others.

"Such activities are uncalled for and should be refrained as these are not in accordance with the law," UIDAI said in a statement.

The stand-off between Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) and Apple over allowing the “Do Not Disturb” (DND) app on the company’s App Store and iPhone devices may take a while to get resolved because there’s still no meeting ground between the two with both parties adamant on their stand.

A day after some people claimed to have accessed personal details of Trai Chairman R S Sharma after he disclosed his Aadhaar number on Twitter, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has denied that the details were fetched from its servers or Aadhaar database.

Call drops deteriorated in May with the percentage inching up to 0.60% during the month compared with 0.52% in April 2018, latest Trai data show. This is against three consecutive months of good performance when the rate fell to 0.54% in February and remained flat at 0.52% during March and April, respectively.

Telecom regulator Trai has notified new rules to check pesky calls and messages, rejecting claims of operators that they have to bear additional costs to set up infrastructure. In fact, the regulator has said that compliance costs will come down drastically as the operators can outsource the work to establish, operate and maintain the infrastructure to digital ledger or blockchain providers.

Terming Trai's recent recommendations on data privacy and ownership as "timely and valuable", a top official on Wednesday said the Telecom Department will consider all suggestions related to the telecom sector while others will be looked into by Justice Srikrishna panel that is crafting the overarching data protection law.
