Maruti Suzuki clocks 15% jump in May sales

Country’s largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki has reported a 15 per cent jump in domestic sales of passenger vehicles (cars, utility vehicles and vans) in May. The company sold a total of 130,248 units in the domestic market against 113,162 units in same month last year.

Most segments of the products at Maruti reported strong growth. The utility vehicle segment jumped 66 per cent to 22,608 units while mini segment (Alto and WagonR) grew 18 per cent to 39,089 vehicles.

The Indian car market has approximately 100 models, manufactured by about 15 companies. But only one-tenth of these have sales worth Rs 6,500 crore ($1 billion) or more as they clock large volumes and have been more successful.

The list of top 10 vehicles, value-wise, is dominated by the top two players in the market — Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai. However, Toyota, the third player on this list, scores and stands ahead of the two companies with its Innova Crysta.

Maruti Suzuki today launched the new Dzire sedan, a lighter and more fuel efficient vehicle at Rs 5.45 lakh onwards (ex showroom, Delhi). The petrol variant begins at Rs 5.45 lakh and goes up to Rs 8.41 lakh. Diesel variant begins at Rs 6.45 lakh and goes up to Rs 9.41 lakh. Maruti spent Rs 1,000 crore to develop the new Dzire.

First launched in 2008, Dzire happens to be Maruti’s second most sold car (after the Alto) and brings 14 per cent of the company’s domestic sales. Dzire also is the largest selling compact sedan in the country accounting for half of the segment volumes.

Maruti Suzuki has launched the new Dzire in India at Rs 5.45 lakh, ex-showroom, Delhi. The new Dzire is based on the company's 'Heartect' B-platform that makes the sedan weigh lesser by up to 105 kg for the diesel and 85 kg for the petrol versions. Talking about the design, the car manufacturer has equipped the Dzire with LED projector headlamps with DRLs (Daytime Running Lamps), LED tail lamps, OVRMs (Outside Rear View Mirrors) with turn indicators, chrome embellished front grille and 15-inch alloy wheels. These features are available only on the higher variants.

Maruti Suzuki India (MSIL) hit a new high of Rs 6,700, up 2.7% on BSE in early morning trade after the company reported a record monthly domestic sales of 144,492 vehicles in April 2017. The company had sold 117,045 vehicles in April 2016.

All segments of vehicles except vans grew in double digits: the mini segment (Alto and WagonR) grew by 22%; the compact segment (Swift, Celerio, Ignis, Baleno, and Dzire) by 39%; and utility vehicle by 28%.
