M&M says open to building smaller engines

Mahindra & Mahindra, the country's largest utility vehicle manufacturer, is open to building engines smaller than the one in the KUV1OO, which it launched last week.

The Mumbai-based automaker launched the KUV100 with an engine that is nearly half of the standard engines in its portfolio. The KUV1OO is powered by 1.2 litre petrol and diesel engines whereas M&M’s other engines – 2.2 and 2.5 litre diesel ones – power the Scorpio, the XUV500 and Bolero.

Mumbai: Mahindra and Mahindra Ltd, India’s largest SUV maker, on Wednesday launched Imperio, a pick-up truck. Priced at Rs.6.25 lakh (ex-showroom, Thane), the new offering is aimed at small and medium enterprises.

Positioned as a premium product offering, the model boasts of car-like convenience features, including ergonomically designed seats, air conditioner, a plush cabin and dashboard.

Aggrieved carmakers have joined hands and moved the Supreme Court against Delhi government's order the ban on diesel vehicles registration.

On Monday, Mahindra & Mahindra, Toyota and Mercedes-Benz moved the Supreme Court seeking a modification in the order calling for a ban on the registration of diesel cars/ SUVs above 2,000 cc engine in the NCR region.

The Supreme Court ban on registration of diesel vehicles of 2,000cc and above capacity in the national capital region appears to have impacted sales volume of Mahindra & Mahindra and Toyota. The ban, imposed on December 16 to address deteriorating air quality, is in place till March 31. After reporting sales growth of 19 per cent and 36 per cent, respectively, in October and November last year, M&M's sales in December saw a moderate growth of one per cent. Bulk of the company’s products (such as Scorpio and XUV500) have an engine capacity of over 2,000 cc and have been hit by the ban imposed by the Supreme Court.

Automaker Mahindra and Mahindra will commercially launch the electric variants of its passenger car Verito and mini truck Maxximo by February and is in talks with cab aggregators such as Ola to boost sales of the green cars in the country.

The company on Friday unveiled its new sports utility vehicle (SUV) christened the KUV1OO to be sold in petrol and diesel options.

The Mumbai-based company, which is to bear the brunt of the Supreme Court ban on sale of diesel vehicles above 2,000 cc in Delhi and national capital region (NCR), will have a petrol option ready for most of its offering, including heavy SUVs such as Scorpio and XUV5OO.

With fears of a temporary ban on sales in Delhi of large diesel vehicles being extended to other cities, Mahindra & Mahindra, India's biggest maker of sports utility vehicles (SUV), is considering reducing the size of its engines.

According to a Supreme Court order passed on Wednesday, the registration of SUVs and other diesel cars with an engine capacity of 2,000cc or more is banned in Delhi and the National Capital Region till March 31.

Shares of Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) have slipped 6% to Rs 1,211 on the BSE in otherwise firm market ahead of the Supreme Court decision today that may restrict registration of diesel cars with engine capacity of over 2,000cc, cancel license for 15-year-old vehicles and mandate higher emission norms in Delhi.

The apex court has made significant observation regarding the diesel vehicles, and if imposed, will result in a partial diesel vehicle ban in the city. SC has proposed to disallow registration of diesel vehicles with engine capacity of greater than 2000cc.

Mahindra & Mahindra is close to signing a deal to buy Italian car designer Pininfarina , two sources with direct knowledge of the matter said on Friday, the latest purchase of an iconic Italian brand by an Asian company.

The terms of the deal have been agreed by both parties after months of talks and an announcement could come as soon as next week, the sources said.
