Etihad Airways keeps the United Arab Emirates (UAE) connected with the world's big cities. As a commercial airline based in Abu Dhabi, Etihad Airways serves about 50 destinations in Europe, Asia, and the Middle East; destinations include London, Moscow, Mumbai, Damascus, Kuwait, and Islamabad. Along with its scheduled service, Finnair operates charter flights to resort destinations in the Canary Islands, the Caribbean, Latin America, the Mediterranean, and Southeast Asia. The carrier operates a diverse fleet of about 65 aircraft from its hub in Helsinki. In addition, Finnair provides travel agency services, catering, package tours, and aircraft maintenance. The Finnish government owns a controlling stake in Finnair, which was founded in 1923.

Regional airline Flybe flies passengers throughout the UK and to about a dozen countries in Europe. It serves around 55 destinations overall, including about 25 in the UK, from bases in Belfast, Birmingham, the Channel Islands, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Inverness, Manchester, and Southampton. Flybe expanded in 2007 by acquiring key operations of British Airways' BA Connect regional business. Overall, Flybe operates a fleet of more than 70 aircraft, including Embraer 195 regional jets and Bombardier Q400 turboprops. The carrier began operations in 1979. The Flybe brand, adopted in 2002 and pronounced as two syllables, is derived from one of the company's former operating identities, British European, or BE.

Frontier Airlines Holdings jets part the clouds and ply the skies from the Mile High City. The company's primary subsidiary, Frontier Airlines, operates as a budget carrier from its hub at Denver International Airport. The airline maintains a fleet of about 50 Airbus 319 and 318 jets with onboard amenities that include satellite TV. With subsidiary Lynx Aviation, it serves about 50 cities, primarily in the US west of the Mississippi but also in Mexico and Costa Rica. In April 2008, Frontier Airlines Holdings entered Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection. It emerged in October 2009 after it was acquired by Republic Airways for about $109 million.

From Canada to Chile, airline TACA (Transportes A鲥os Centroamericanos) bridges the Americas. The carrier serves about 30 cities throughout Central and South America and the Caribbean, as well as about 10 cities in North America. It operates a fleet of about 40 jets, mostly Airbus models, from hubs in Peru, Costa Rica, and El Salvador. It maintains code-sharing relationships with carriers such as Iberia and United Airlines. (Code-sharing allows airlines to sell tickets on one another's flights and thus extend their networks.) Founded as an air cargo carrier in 1931, TACA is owned by the family of CEO Roberto Kriete. In October 2009 TACA announced it would be taken over by Columbia-based carrier Avianca.

Gulf Air helps travelers from around the world find their way to the Persian Gulf, or, more precisely, to Bahrain. From its hub at Bahrain International Airport in Manama, the carrier serves more than 40 cities in more than 30 countries worldwide with a fleet of about 30 jet aircraft, mostly Airbus A320s and A330s. It serves additional destinations via code-sharing, a common industry practice in which carriers sell tickets on one another's flights and thus extend their networks. An affiliate provides air cargo transportation services. Gulf Air, which is owned by the government of Bahrain, began operations in 1950.

Hawaii involves an airplane ride -- and so does getting around within Hawaii. Hawaii Island Air, which does business as Island Air, serves several destinations throughout the Hawaiian islands. The carrier's fleet of about half a dozen turboprop aircraft consists of 37-seat Dash 8s, made by Bombardier. Island Air maintains a code-sharing arrangement with Hawaiian Holdings' Hawaiian Airlines, as well as with mainland-based Continental and United. (Code-sharing enable airlines to sell tickets on one another's flights and thus extend their networks.) In addition to its scheduled passenger operations, Island Air provides charter services.
