G. A. Johnson & Son, one of the oldest privately held construction companies in the Midwest, constructs commercial, industrial, institutional, and residential buildings throughout the region. It specializes in building food and drug stores including Jewel Osco, Wal-Mart, and Walgreens, which require a contractor that can coordinate mechanical, electrical, refrigeration, and other specialized requirements. The firm provides consulting, general contracting, skilled trade, and engineering services. It also completes its own concrete and carpentry work. Gustav Augustus Johnson, a Swedish immigrant, founded the company in 1874. The company continues to be owned and operated by fifth-generation family members.
