The Kirby Company
"At no cost to you, I'd like to vacuum and shampoo your carpet." Representatives of The Kirby Company have been using that line since the first Kirby vacuum, the Model C, was manufactured in 1935. (Its predecessor, the non-electric Vacuette, was developed by Jim Kirby in 1914.) New Kirby machines have always been sold exclusively door-to-door; the upscale vacuums cost about $1,800 and come with a lifetime warranty. Kirby items are sold through independent dealers and distributors in the US and 70 other countries. The company, named for Jim Kirby, who designed his first vacuum cleaner in 1906, also sells a line of cleaning products. Kirby is part of Scott Fetzer Company, which operates more than 20 businesses.
