Thailand's first cement manufacturer, Siam Cement was founded in 1913 on orders from King Rama VI. The government controls almost a third of Siam Cement. Siam Cement has more to hold it together than its name suggests. It still makes cement (sold under the Elephant and Tiger brands), but gets most of its sales from petrochemicals, paper, and packaging; other lines of business include building products and distribution. Siam Cement also has real estate holdings. The Siam Cement Public company cracked out of its cement mold in response to Asia's financial crisis of the late 1990s; acquisitions made it one of Thailand's biggest industrial conglomerates, with five business units encompassing more than 100 companies.

TIC Gums was established in 1909 and is operated by the third generation of the Andon family, which has owned the company since 1949. While TIC Gums doesn't spend the day blowing bubbles, its gums are found in everything from donut glaze to hand lotion. The company is a leading US provider of hydrocolloids (thickeners) used in cosmetics, food (including chewing gum), and pharmaceuticals. Products -- including agar; carrageenan; guar gum; and pectin in powder, spray, and "pre-hydrated" forms -- are shipped to customers worldwide. Formed in 1952 and still controlled by the family of founder David Tilley, the company operates a large distribution facility in Baltimore. Tilley distributes chemicals, oils, and lubricants over roads both flat and hilly. The company offers a full range of chemicals, specialty chemicals, and solvents for customers in the food, personal care, and pharmaceutical industries. Its oil and lubricant products -- motor oils, hydraulic oils, transmission fluids, rust preventers, metalworking fluids -- are typically used by the automotive and manufacturing industries. Tilley also provides packaging, transfer, and handling services. Tilley's suppliers include Morton Salt, BASF, Rhodia, and Dow.

Timminco produces silicon metal for the chemical (silicones), aluminum and electronics/solar industries, through its majority owned production partnership with Dow Corning, known as Québec Silicon. Timminco is also a producer of solar grade silicon, using its proprietary technology for purifying silicon metal, for the solar photovoltaic energy industry, through its wholly owned subsidiary Bécancour Silicon.

TVK went from painting the town red to covering it in plastic(s). Tiszai Vegyi Kombinat Rt. (TVK) began as a factory commissioned to produce paint for the Soviet Union; today it manufactures petrochemicals, primarily olefins and polyolefins. TVK is Hungary's sole manufacturer of polyolefins and has 20% of Central Europe's petrochemical market share. The company sells its products -- ethylene, propylene, and their derivatives -- to small- and medium-sized plastics makers throughout Europe. TVK is majority owned by Hungary's largest company, oil biggie MOL Group.
