North American Composites (NAC) comes in. A business unit of resins maker Interplastic Corporation, NAC distributes composites and cast polymers that act as reinforcing fibers for a resins mixture. NAC's two dozen distribution locations form a distribution network that stretches throughout the US and Canada.

NOVA Chemicals Corporation muscles into a long line of plastic products. The company makes ethylene, polyethylene, and performance styrenics used in the manufacture of plastic and foam products. Applications include packaging, plastic bags, appliances, electronics, housewares, and plastic pipe. Through its INEOS NOVA joint venture (with INEOS), the company was one of the world's largest producers of styrene monomer and styrenic polymers. However, in 2010 INEOS announced it was buying out NOVA's 50% share of INEOS NOVA in favor of a new venture with BASF SE. The US and Canada account for 80% of NOVA's sales. It's owned by Abu Dhabi's International Petroleum Investment Co., or IPIC.

Novozymes A/S might have had a hand in brewing your beer, washing the mustard stain off your shirt, turning corn into ethanol for your car, or even treating your medical condition. The company produces more than 700 kinds of enzymes, microorganisms, biopolymers, and proteins used by more than 40 industries in 130 countries worldwide. Its enzymes are used in detergents, foods, animal feed, and other industrial and commercial products. The firm's microorganisms are used in wastewater treatment, and its proteins and biopolymers are used in pharmaceuticals. Novozymes is a sister company to Novo Nordisk, and the not-for-profit Novo Nordisk Foundation controls a majority of Novozymes' voting stock.

NuCO2 puts tiny bubbles in the soda. Through a network of about 140 service centers throughout the nation, the company supplies liquid carbon dioxide (bulk CO2) for carbonating and dispensing fountain drinks, which differs from the traditional method of carbonation that uses high-pressure CO2. Its more than 130,000 customers include restaurants (Pizza Hut), retailers (Costco), convenience stores (7-Eleven), movie theaters (Loews Cineplex), and stadiums and arenas (Madison Square Garden). NuCO2's services include system installation and maintenance, product delivery, and technical support. Private equity firm Aurora Capital spent $485 million to acquire NuCO2 in 2008. The firm filed to go public in April 2010.

Occidental Chemical (OxyChem) manufactures basic chemicals, vinyls, and performance chemicals. The company is the top US maker of chlorine and caustic soda (used in bleach, plastics, and pulp and paper) and the top producer of potassium hydroxide, or caustic potash (used in fertilizers). Through subsidiary OxyVinyls it's the leading North American maker of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM), which is used to make PVC resins. The company operates some 22 plants throughout the US as well as another three in Brazil, Canada, and Chile. (OxyChem owns 50% of the Brazilian plant.)
