Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative's mission is similar to the late Lady Bird Johnson's quest to spread wildflower seeds along Texas' highways -- the cooperative spreads currents of electricity among rural central Texas dwellers. One of the largest power distribution cooperatives in the state, Bluebonnet Electric serves almost 80,000 customers in 14 counties. The member-owned company, which was formed in 1939, operates approximately 11,000 miles of transmission and distribution lines, and 19 substations. It purchases its wholesale power supply at 21 Lower Colorado River Authority-owned substations.

BlueStar Energy intends to burn bright in the firmament of independent electricity providers. Serving customers in the deregulated markets of Maryland, Illinois, Pennsylvania, and Washington, DC, the company offers variable- and fixed-rate and custom plans along with green energy to industrial, commercial, and residential customers. Its energy efficiency program examines customers' energy usage and offers services to decrease costs including reworking interior and exterior lighting, monitoring power use, rewiring fixtures, and performing exterior maintenance. BlueStar Energy spreads it power from offices in Chicago and Peoria, Illinois.

The Board of Public Utilities of Kansas City, Kansas (known as the Kansas City Board of Public Utilities) will help light the way. The utility provides electric transmission and distribution services to approximately 65,000 customers and water distribution services to 51,000 customers in the Kansas City metropolitan area (in Wyandotte and Johnson counties). The Kansas City Board of Public Utilities also has interests in coal, gas, and oil-fired power generation facilities. The utility is owned by the Unified Government of Wyandotte County and Kansas City.

Bonneville Power Administration (BPA) keeps the lights on in the Pacific Northwest. The US Department of Energy power marketing agency operates a transmission grid (with more than 15,000 miles of high-voltage lines) that delivers about 35% of the electrical power consumed in the region. The electricity that BPA wholesales is generated primarily by 31 federal hydroelectric plants and one private nuclear facility. BPA also purchases power from other hydroelectric, gas-fired, and wind and solar generation facilities in North America. Founded in 1937, BPA sells power to more than 140 primary customers, mainly public and investor-owned utilities in the Pacific Northwest.
