The company, which started out with five army surplus shops in California in 1955, is a leading sporting goods retailer with about 385 stores in a dozen mostly Western states, including California, Washington, and Arizona. The company sells brand-name (adidas, Coleman, Easton) and private-label equipment, apparel, and footwear for indoor and outdoor activities such as camping, hunting, fishing, tennis, golf, and snowboarding. Big 5 Sporting Goods is run by its chairman and CEO Steven Miller, the son of company co-founder Robert Miller.

Seaman and sail maker Thomas Black founded Blacks in 1861, when he offered his sails for sale. From there, the company moved on to tents, eventually offering camping gear and sporting goods. Now Blacks Leisure Group (BLG) sells outdoor gear and apparel through more than 300 stores throughout the UK and Ireland under the Blacks, Freespirit, and Millets banners. With 200-plus stores, Millets is the UK's largest outdoor retailer. The smaller Blacks chain sells North Face, Merrell, and Coleman brand merchandise and its owns brands from about 90 shops. BLG has been closing stores in its boardwear chain Freespirit, which now operates only about a dozen locations. Rival Sports Direct owns about 28% of BLG.

Camfour is taking careful aim and hopes to hit its target bottom line. Catering to independent retail sporting goods stores and gun dealers in the US, the company distributes firearms, ammunition, and related shooting accessories, as well as military surplus items. Product categories include air guns, new and used handguns and long guns, scopes and sights, reloading supplies, and powder. Camfour stocks products from such brands as Glock, Smith & Wesson, Beretta, and Colt. The firm got its start in 1952 when Al Ferst bought a fishing and tackle distribution business in Massachusetts and renamed it Camfour.

Campmor takes its name seriously and seriously implores you to take to the outdoors and camp more. A leading manufacturer of outdoor clothing and equipment, the company is best known through its catalogs and website, though it does operate a single retail store in Paramus, New Jersey. Offerings include apparel and footwear, climbing gear, sleeping bags, tents, and more. Besides its name brand, Campmor carries products from such makers as Columbia Sportswear, JanSport, The North Face, and Patagonia. It also sells canoes and kayaks, and runs a full-service bike shop at its brick-and-mortar store. Founded in 1978 by chairman Morton Jarashow, the company is run by his son, Daniel (president and CEO).

Christy Sports isn't some girly group of ponytailed cheerleaders. It's the largest specialty ski and snowboard retailer in the Rocky Mountains. With more than 40 retail stores in skiing hot spots like Snowmass, Crested Butte, Steamboat Springs, and Vail, the company sells skiing, snowboarding, snow-shoeing, mountain biking, and golf equipment along with shoes, shirts, gloves, and bags to carry it all. Stores also carry patio furniture, grills, hammocks, and other accessories for the outdoor life and rent skiing and snowboarding gear. Christy's staff are all serious skiers and snowboarders who use the equipment they sell. The company was founded in 1958 by avid skiers Ed and Gale Crist.
