PMC Commercial Trust likes lending to little businesses. The real estate investment trust (REIT) makes small business loans, primarily to limited-service hotel franchisees. The loans, ranging from $100,000 to $4 million, are secured by first liens on real estate and written for hotel owner/operators of national franchises such as Comfort Inn and Holiday Inn Express. PMC Commercial Trust also lends to owners of convenience stores, restaurants, and other small businesses. About 20% of its loan portfolio is concentrated in Texas. Subsidiaries are active in Small Business Administration (SBA) lending and in investing (as small business investment companies, or SBICs). The company was founded in 1993.

The industrial real estate investment trust (REIT) acquires and develops warehouses and distribution facilities for some 4,000 retailers and manufacturers such as MolsonCoors and Unilever. It owns more than 2,400 properties in Asia, Europe, and North America. All together, ProLogis owns, manages or is developing more than 475 million sq. ft. of space. The company is selective about development and usually only develops pre-leased properties. Its fund management operations oversee long-term property investments. ProLogis holds about 30% of publicly traded ProLogis European Properties.

Terreno Realty has its eye set on acquiring industrial real estate. The company invests in and operates industrial properties in major US coastal markets, including Southern California, San Francisco Bay Area, Seattle, New Jersey/New York City, Washington, DC/Baltimore, and South Florida. Types of real estate it targets include warehouse and distribution facilities, flex buildings for light manufacturing and research and development, and transportation and shipping centers. The company took itself public in February 2010 in an effort to capitalize on a distressed market ripe with foreclosures and troubled loans.
