Manor Care is a lord of the manor in the nursing home kingdom. Operating as HCR Manor Care, the firm runs about 500 nursing homes, assisted living centers, and rehabilitation facilities in about 30 states. Masonicare was established in 1995, but its roots date back to 1895 when the Masonic Charity Foundation of Connecticut established a home for orphans and the elderly with Masonic ties. The not-for-profit corporation is led by CEO Stephen McPherson. It may have started out as a place for elderly Masons to retire to, but today Masonicare provides senior health care services to all Connecticut seniors, Mason or not. The firm operates retirement and nursing homes, skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities, assisted living communities, and home and hospice care. In addition to physical therapy and rehabilitation, the group also provides inpatient and outpatient mental health care for seniors.

One of the largest owners and operators of senior citizen housing in the US, the family-owned company operates some 55 assisted living, independent living, and Alzheimer's care communities in eight states. The company has grown by buying active properties and developing new ones, primarily in the Seattle region. However, the company has begun diversifying into mixed-use developments featuring commercial, retail, and residential space in urban areas. Chairman Charles Wright founded the company and opened its first community in 1993.
