Observer Standard Newspapers is a regional news publisher with about 15 papers serving readers primarily in the Midlands. Its portfolio includes the "Bromsgove Standard", the "Leamington Observer", the "Redditch Standard", and the "Worcester Standard". Ogden Newspapers is a leading publisher with more than 40 daily papers serving mostly small markets in about a dozen states. The World-Herald is the largest employee-owned daily newspaper in the United States. The Omaha World-Herald has had only six publishers in its history: Gilbert M. Hitchcock (1885-1934); Henry Doorly (1934-1955); Walter E. Christenson (1955-1966); Harold W. Andersen (1966-1989); John Gottschalk (1989 - 2007); Terry Kroeger (since 2008).

Paxton Media Group owns about 30 daily newspapers in the Midwest and South, including its flagship The Paducah Sun (Kentucky) and The Herald-Sun (Durham, North Carolina). The company also owns several dozen weekly papers and more than 100 free papers, as well as a television station in Paducah, Kentucky. W.F. Paxton launched The Paducah Sun in 1896; his family, led by CEO David Paxton, continues to run the publishing business.

Philadelphia Media Holdings owns and operates The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Philadelphia Daily News, the two primary newspapers serving the Philadelphia metro area. The Inquirer, one of the top newspapers in the country, boasts a circulation of more than 360,000, while the tabloid-style Daily News has a circulation of about 100,000. Philadelphia Media also operates online portal Philly.com, which aggregates news from both papers. Philadelphia Media and its operating unit Philadelphia Newspapers both filed for bankruptcy in 2009.
