Novariant, Inc.

Novariant, Inc. emerged from Stanford University GPS Laboratory in 1994 to pursue contract research and development for precision vehicle control systems. In the early 1990s, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) asked Stanford to investigate the feasibility of automatically landing airliners in low visibility conditions using precision GPS.
The research team built a fully automatic landing system that was used to land a United Airlines 737, completely hands-free. These flight tests in 1994 helped the FAA prove to the international community that GPS could be incorporated in a cost-effective, extremely accurate (centimeter-level) high-integrity navigation system for reliable control in the most demanding, zero-visibility conditions.
