Nippon Light Metal Company (NLM) is heavily into aluminum. The company's operations span the process from turning bauxite ore into alumina to smelting aluminum to fabricating finished aluminum products. It makes ingot, sheets, and extrusions; chemicals (aluminum hydroxide, caustic soda, fluorine); fabricated products; and building materials. Those last two units -- fabricated products (food containers, fuel tanks, ladders) and building materials (scaffolds, fences and railings, soundproof walls) -- contribute about two-thirds of sales. NLM has a joint venture with Mitsubishi to produce aluminum sheet for automotive applications.

Noranda Aluminum is a vertically integrated aluminum producer. The company starts the process by mining bauxite through a joint venture in a Jamaican mining project, refining it into alumina at another joint venture in Louisiana, and then using the alumina to make primary aluminum metal products at its facility in Missouri and aluminum coils at four rolling facilities in the Southeast. Noranda's primary aluminum products include aluminum rods, extruded billets, and foundry ingots. The downstream business segment manufactures foil and light sheet metal. Sales are evenly split between the two segments. Owned by Apollo Management, Noranda Aluminum filed for an IPO in 2008.

Nordural, also known as Nordic Aluminum, operates the Nordural primary aluminum reduction facility located in Grundartangi, Iceland. The primary aluminum metal manufacturer has a production capacity of about 260,000 tons per year, having expanded the facility from less than 100,000 tons annually in the last half decade. Customers include metals giants BHP Billiton and Glencore. US aluminum producer Century Aluminum owns Nordural.

In 2010 Norsk Hydro agreed to buy the Brazilian aluminum operations of Vale SA in a $5 billion deal. You may find the oil business fascinating, but Norsk Hydro no longer has any interest in the industry. Until 2007 its operations were divided more or less equally between aluminum and energy products. Norsk Hydro is now focused almost exclusively on its aluminum operations, which are strong throughout Asia, Europe, and North and South America, and rank among the world's top five, along with the likes of Rio Tinto Alcan, RUSAL, and Alcoa. In 2006 it combined its energy operations with Norwegian state-owned Statoil, though it still owns a small energy business with 17 hydroelectric power stations in Norway.

Northwest Aluminum Specialties produces aluminum billet in a variety of alloys. Using both pure and recycled aluminum as its base material, the company produces log-shaped cast billet products that are then sold to extruders. End products made from the company's billet include air bag canisters, automotive wheels and wheel covers, bicycle frames, and missile housings. An employee-owned company, Northwest Aluminum Specialties operates from a lone facility in Oregon. It also maintains a European presence through a Dutch sales office.
