Barkley Seed, Inc.
Barkley Seed has sowing possibilities. The firm supplies grain seeds, mainly wheat and barley. Its seed varieties are adapted to five growing regions in the US -- the Central Plains, East, Northern Plains, Northwest, and Southwest -- depending on customer location. Choosing not to sell on the retail market, Barkley focuses on the research and development of identity-preserved seed varieties (those that maintain their genetic makeup). R&D is largely funded through royalties, which are generated from seed sales to licensed growers. Barkley licenses growers nationwide and operates facilities in Arizona and California. In 2009 it sold WestBred, its indirectly owned wheat germplasm unit, to biotech giant Monsanto.
