The not-for-profit organization offers about 8,000 non-credit, personal-enrichment programs in more than 90 countries, from Africa to Antarctica. Programs, called Exploritas, are taught by experts such as professors, local scholars, and museum professionals and include lectures, field trips, and hands-on activities. Participants experience and learn about art, literature, music, nature, and traditional cultures. Elderhostel was founded in 1975 by world traveler and social activist Marty Knowlton and University of New Hampshire administrator David Bianco.
