Nederlandse Gasunie treats the Dutch to a steady supply of natural gas. The company transports natural gas throughout the Netherlands and Northern Germany through its 15,000-km. gas transmission it network. In 2007 its natural gas throughput totaled more than 95.9 billion cu. meters. Gasunie also provides research and engineering services. The company split off its gas wholesale trading arm as Gasunie Trading & Supply, (now GasTerra) in mid-2005. When the change occurred, the Dutch government's ownership stake in Gasunie went from 50% to 100%. (Exxon Mobil and Royal Dutch Shell still each indirectly hold 25% of GasTerra.)

Northern Natural Gas (NNG) keeps the pipes gassed up. The company operates 15,140 miles of pipeline stretching from the Permian Basin in Texas to the Great Lakes in the Midwest. It also provides transportation and storage services (five natural gas storage facilities) to some 75 utilities and a variety of other customers in the Upper Midwest. NNG has a 5.3 billion cu. ft. per day market area peak capacity. Dynegy took over NNG in 2002 from the pipeline unit's former parent, bankrupt energy giant Enron. The deal was part of Dynegy's proposed acquisition of Enron, which was called off. To strengthen its own balance sheet, Dynegy sold NNG to MidAmerican Energy Holdings later that year.

Starting in the southwest, Northwest Pipeline pipes up the gas. The company operates a 3,900-mile-long pipeline system which carries natural gas to customers located between New Mexico and Washington. It also operates 41 gas transmission compressor stations and a liquefied natural gas (LNG) storage facility in Plymouth, Washington. Northwest Pipeline's customers include Puget Sound Energy (20% of Northwest Pipeline's 2007 sales) and Northwest Natural Gas (11% of sales). The company is a part of The Williams Companies' natural gas pipeline and transportation division.

(NYSE: NS), one of the nation's largest asphalt refiners and marketers and operators of petroleum product terminals and petroleum liquids pipelines. The general partner manages the business affairs of NuStar Energy L.P., which is a master limited partnership based in San Antonio, with 8,417 miles of pipeline, 82 terminal facilities and four crude oil storage facilities. It has assets strategically located in major U.S. markets and in the Netherlands Antilles, Canada, Mexico, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. NuStar Energy L.P.'s asphalt refineries, refined product terminals, petroleum and specialty liquids storage and terminaling operations, and crude oil storage tank facilities are predominantly located on waterways that are easily accessible by barge or vessel. Altogether, these facilities have over 91 million barrels of storage capacity. NuStar Energy L.P.'s crude oil and refined products pipeline systems largely serve growing markets in the Mid-Continent, Southwest and Texas-Mexico border region of the United States.
