It offers thousands of lenses that it buys from major manufacturers and distributors and encourages its customers to provide prescriptions for their lenses. 1-800 CONTACTS sells a wide array of contact lenses, including those made by Acuvue, Biomedics, Focus, and FreshLook. Founded in 1995 by entrepreneurs Jonathan Coon and John Nichols, the company was taken private by affiliates of New York-based equity firm Fenway Partners for about $340 million in 2007.
