These chips are used primarily in communications applications by customers such as Maxim Integrated Products. Besides handling manufacturing chores, Polar Semi offers services such as prototyping and testing. The company took its current form in 1999 when Agere Systems (then part of Lucent, later acquired by LSI Corp.) bought the disk drive chip designs (and the name) of VTC, Polar Semi's predecessor. Sanken Electric acquired Polar Semi in mid-2005 for around $83 million.
