OAO Gazprom operates Russia's domestic gas pipeline network and delivers gas to countries across Central Asia and Europe. Gazprom relies heavily on Western exports. OAO Gazprom also holds stakes in Russian financial institutions, a polypropylene plant, and its own telecom network. The Russian government has boosted its stake in Gazprom from 38% to just more than 50%. Gazprom accounts for about 25% of Russia's tax revenues.

OAO NOVATEK sells natural gas directly throughout the country. NOVATEK focuses its production on the prolific Yamal-Nenets region, the world's largest natural gas area. Power generation plants, metallurgical plants, and wholesale gas suppliers are among the company's main customers.
