Hyperdynamics was founded in 1996 and is traded on the NYSE Amex under the symbol HDY. Hyperdynamics has shifted its business focus from IT consulting services to oil and gas exploration, primarily in Africa. Insignia Energy Ltd. focuses on finding and exploiting high quality, long-lived reserves in properties in northern, eastern, and central Alberta. Insignia Energy produces about 3,300 barrels of oil equivalent per day of natural gas. Insignia Energy Ltd. has proved reserves in 7.9 million barrels of oil equivalent and an undeveloped land base of 235,000 net acres. In 2008 Insignia Energy completed a reverse takeover of Flagship Energy. In 2009 it expanded further, acquiring fellow explorer Grey Wolf Exploration.

Iteration Energy reiterates its desire to be a top oil and gas exploration and production company. Originally a biotech company -- SYNSORB Biotech, then an oil and gas company -- Hawker Resources, the group subsequently acquired other companies exploring in the Western Canada Sedimentary Basin for natural gas and oil. As Hawker Resources it acquired fellow explorers Southward Energy and ZORIN Exploration in 2003 and 2004, respectively. In 2005 Iteration Energy Ltd. acquired Iteration Energy and took on that company's name. Following Iteration Energy's acquisition of fellow explorer Cyries Energy in 2008 the company reported proved reserves of 34.7 million barrels of oil equivalent.

JAPEX is at the apex of Japan's oil and gas industry. Japan Petroleum Exploration (JAPEX) explores for and produces oil and gas in Japan and around the world and has proved reserves of 272 million barrels of oil equivalent. Japan Petroleum Exploration Co. exploration and production division sells crude oil, natural gas, and liquefied natural gas (LNG). Another division contracts for drilling projects and geological and geophysical surveys. Other operations include the sale of petroleum products such as LPG and fuel oil. Expanding its portfolio, in 2009 JAPEX acquired the oil product sales unit of a Mitsubishi Materials subsidiary. The Japanese government controls 34% of JAPEX.

JED Oil's strategy is to develop and operate low risk and low cost oil and natural gas assets in Western Canada, particularly ones near proven fields in Alberta, and in the US Rockies. Subsidiary JED Oil (USA) is developing oil and gas assets in North Dakota and Wyoming. In 2007 JED Oil Inc. reported estimated proved reserves of 3 million barrels of oil equivalent. However, JED Oil's confidence has been shaken; it has been experiencing financial difficulties and in 2008 the company was forced to seek government protection from creditors under the Companies' Creditors Arrangement Act.
