The Institute of Mathematical Sciences (IMSc), founded in 1962, is a national institute for fundamental research in the frontier disciplines of mathematical sciences. The three main disciplines in the institute are Mathematics, Theoretical Physics and Theoretical Computer Science.

The Physical Research Laboratory was founded by Dr Vikram A Sarabhai in November 1947 following an agreement between the Ahmedabad Education Society and Karmakshetra Educational Foundation. The Laboratory had its humble beginnings in the M. G. Science Institute and its research activiites were focussed primarily on Cosmic Rays and Upper Atmospheric Studies.
