MUMBAI: Barely a week into the launch of Hyundai's Creta, sports utility vehicle with an automatic transmission, Mahindra & Mahindra, India's largest selling utility vehicle maker has officially re-launched its own automatic version on the new generation Scorpio at 13.13 lakh ex-showroom New Delhi, a good Rs 45,000 lower than its new rival Creta.
Available on the S10 variant, on a like to like comparison, a 2 wheel drive automatic transmission - Scorpio is priced Rs 45,000 lower versus Hyundai Creta, which is priced at Rs 13.58 lakh ex-showroom New Delhi.
Mahindra claims, Scorpio is the only SUV in its class to offer 6-speed Automatic Transmission with four wheel drive as an option. The 4-wheel drive vehicle with a BS-IV automatic option, is priced at Rs 14.33 lakh - ex-showroom New Delhi.
Mahindra had discontinued the older version of Scorpio automatic, which was a 5 speed automatic -- at the launch of new generation Scorpio in September of 2014.
People close to the company say, the share was miniscule. This re-launch is to thwart off new competition from Hyundai Creta and others.
Hyundai Motor India recently told ET, that the company expects at least 15% of Creta sales to come with an automatic transmission. Infact the company had reworked its supply schedules for the transmission based on the initial interest from the consumers. Creta had 15,000 confirmed consumer interest on the day of launch on 21st July.
Launched in September 2014, the New Generation Scorpio has been built on an all-new platform with cushion suspension and anti-roll technologies and comes with contemporary, more aggressive exterior styling, luxurious blue-grey interiors and advanced technology features.
