Nasscom to set up CoE for big data, analytics

The National Association of Software and Services Companies (Nasscom), apex body representing the Indian information technology (IT) industry, is planning to set up a Centre of Excellence (CoE) with the help of the central government to train professionals in the nuances of big data and business analytics.

Speaking to mediapersons on the sidelines of the two-day Nasscom summit on big data and analytics, which started here on Thursday, Nasscom Chairman B V R Mohan Reddy said it had been working with the Centre on this.

“The multi-disciplinary business analytics industry in India currently employs 50,000 specialists, and is expected to grow at a rate of 20 per cent every year in the coming five years,” he said.

The CoE will be developed through the public-private partnership model between the industry and the government and is expected to operational in this financial year, he said, adding in the next four to five years, about 400 solutions should be coming out of India for the global market.

According to K S Viswanathan, vice-president of Nasscom, there were 370 start-ups in the country, creating a niche for different sectors making the $1.5-billion analytics industry to grow faster.

“The proposed Centre of Excellence will develop curriculum, mode of assessment and certification in big data analysis to match world standards as the demand for data analysts in the US alone is around 1, 40,000,” he added.

Replying to a query on the recent furore over Indian IT firms, violating H1B Visa laws of the US, Reddy said the Indian companies were 100 per cent compliant of the US government’s laws.

"However Nasscom is also equally confident that the world is looking towards East as hitherto closed economies are opening creating new employment opportunities. India has huge potential due to the convergence of software and hardware,” he said.
