Central govt increases excise duty on petrol, diesel by ₹2 per litre

The Government of India, on Monday, raised excise duty on petrol and diesel by ₹2 per litre according to a report by CNBC-TV18.
According to the latest notification issued by the Department of Revenue, Ministry of Finance, the change will take effect from April 8.
In December 2024, the government scrapped the earlier windfall profit tax on domestically-produced crude oil as well as on the export of jet fuel (aviation turbine fuel), diesel and petrol, following a decline in international oil prices.
India had first introduced windfall profit taxes on July 1, 2022, joining several other countries that levy such taxes on the super-normal profits of energy companies.

Fugitive liquor baron Vijay Mallya has claimed that Indian banks have got access to his properties worth Rs 14,131.6 crore, more than twice the amount that he owed to public sector banks.
Mallya cited purported reference to the details of restoration done by the Enforcement Directorate against wilful defaulters in the Finance Ministry's annual report 2024-25 to say that banks have already recovered Rs 14,131.8 crore against Rs 6,203 crore awarded by the Debt Recovery Tribunal.

The National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) on Monday dismissed the plea of IDBI Bank which sought to initiate insolvency proceedings against Zee Entertainment.
A two-member NCLAT bench upheld the order passed by the Mumbai bench of the National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT), which had earlier rejected the private lender's plea to initiate insolvency proceedings against Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd (ZEEL).

The Central Government has released over ₹4,200 crore to Andhra Pradesh for Amaravati Capital Development project after it (centre) received the first disbursement of $205 million from the World Bank, a senior official has said.
The World Bank and Asian Development Bank (ADB) together committed to fund $1600 Million (₹13,600 crore), $800 Million each, for Amaravati capital city phase-I development, while the Centre will be contributing remaining ₹1,400 crore, out of the ₹15,000 crore committed by the Central Government for phase-I of the development.

Bill Ackman and Stanley Druckenmiller condemned President Donald Trump’s decision to launch expansive global tariffs, which have plunged markets into chaos.
The new trade regime is a “mistake,” said Ackman, the founder of Pershing Square and vocal Trump supporter, in a post on X. Druckenmiller, the former George Soros protégé and longtime deficit hawk, also took to the platform to write a rare post expanding on criticisms he made of the policies from an interview in January.
