Andhra Pradesh CID arrests Chandrababu Naidu amidst high tension in Nandyal

In a dramatic development, the AP CID police on September 9 arrested Telugu Desam Party national president and former Chief Minister Nara Chandrababu Naidu in Nandyal, 65 km from Kurnool, preceded by a five-hour-long high tension.

In connection with criminal cases over corruption in AP Skill Development Corporation, the police started deploying heavy police forces in several buses from Kurnool, Nandyal, and Anantapur districts from Friday midnight. Around 5.00 a.m. (Saturday), the police force moved to the campaign vehicle of Mr. Naidu, stationed at a function hall in Nandyal. In a flash, the police took all the TDP cadres surrounding Naidu’s vehicle into custody, before informing the NSG guards about their errand. When Naidu alighted from the vehicle, the CID police handed over the arrest notice to Naidu and took his acknowledgment of the same.

The notice said that the arrest was effected in connection with Crime No. 29/2021 under sections 120 (B) 166, 167, 41b, 420, 465, 468, 471, 409 201, 109 r/w 34 and 37 of the IPC; and Sec 12, 13 (2) r/w 13 (1) (c) and (d ) of the Prevention of Corruption Act of 1968 from the CID police at Mangalagiri.

A few minutes before the formal arrest of Naidu, he resorted to a heated argument with the CID, asking him as to how they could arrest him in an atrocious manner, and on what grounds. The CID police sought Mr Naidu to seek bail in the court and that they would submit the records about the arrest at the court.

The leaders who were arrested in Nandyal included Kalva Srinivasulu, Bhuma Akila Priya, Jagath Vikyath Reddy, Bhuma Brahmananda Reddy, AV Subba Reddy, and others.

Meanwhile, speaking to the media, Mr Naidu contended that he did not commit any crime. He said that the YSRCP government was resorting to oppressing the TDP cadres and democratic forces questioning its follies in a ruthlessly manner. He sought the people and the cadres to maintain restraint, saying that “righteousness will prevail.”

Around 8 a.m., after conducting the medical tests on Mr Naidu, one of his lawyers said that Mr Naidu was suffering from hypertension and high sugar levels. “As his health condition is not encouraging, we will approach the court for relevant action on this,” he said.

Later, the CID police were said to have dropped the idea of shifting Naidu to Vijayawada by chopper but switched to the road route.
