Airbus A320 crashes in French Alps; 148 onboard

An Airbus A320 plane crashed today in the southern French Alps, security sources said.

One of the sources said the plane belonged to Germanwings, an affiliate of German airline Lufthansa, travelling between Barcelona and Dusseldorf. There were 142 passengers and six crew members onboard.

French President Francois Hollande says all are feared dead.

Germanwings has issued a statement via Twitter saying the airline is still working to confirm the incident through its "own information".

The airline requested the public to "monitor our website" and said it would provide information as soon as it is available.

Hollande has expressed his "solidarity" with the families of the victims. "This is a bereavement, a tragedy," he said.
