B V Nagarathna: The judge in line to be India's first woman chief justice

Justice BV Nagarathna is in line to become the first woman Chief Justice of India in 2027 after the top court’s collegium recommended her for elevation, said media reports Wednesday.
Nagarathna, a judge of the Karnataka High Court, will likely have a month-long tenure as chief justice but her appointment will be a historic moment. Her father E S Venkataramiah served as the Chief Justice of India between June 1989 and December 1989. She was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Karnataka High Court in 2008 and as a permanent judge after two years.
She is one of the three women judges recommended for elevation to the top court. Justice Hima Kohi and Justice Bela Trivedi are the other two women judges.
The collegium, led by Chief Justice NV Ramana, recommended the name of nine judges.

HDFC Bank on Saturday posted a 1.31 per cent decline in its consolidated net profit to Rs 16,258 crore for the June 2025 quarter.
The lender had reported a net profit of Rs 16,475 crore in the year-ago period. On a standalone basis, the country's largest private sector lender reported a net profit of Rs 18,155 crore for the reporting quarter, up from Rs 16,174 crore a year ago.

Private sector lender YES Bank’s net profit rose by 59 per cent on a year-on-year (YoY) basis to ₹801 crore for the quarter ended June 2025 (Q1FY26), aided by robust growth in net interest income (NII), and up from ₹502 crore reported in the same period last year.
Sequentially, the profit of the lender was up 8.5 per cent from ₹738 crore in Q4FY25.

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has issued notices to tech giants Google and Meta in connection with its ongoing investigation into alleged money laundering linked to betting applications, official sources said.
As part of the probe, the ED has summoned representatives from both companies to appear before its Delhi headquarters on July 21.
