How long should a call ring on your mobile: TRAI seeks views
Telecom regulator TRAI has sought views from the public on how long a call should ring one's mobile. It wants to assess the impact of ring duration on the quality of service experience and network performances.
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India released a consultation paper – Duration of alert for the called party – asking for inputs on appropriate measures to be taken in this regard.
The paper also explores the possibility of customisation of ringing duration by the customer.
Ring time in mobile networks is typically, 30-45 seconds, while for landline networks, it hovers between 60 and 120 seconds.
"In telecommunication networks, the ringtone is used to alert the called party about the incoming call. Configuration of duration of ringing time on the lower side might save network resources but it may cause concerns related to network performances and customer experience if duration is much lower than the typical time one takes to answer the call," TRAI said in a release.
The regulator added that it may cause poor answer-to-seizure ratio and impact the pattern of outgoing and incoming minutes of usage on point of interconnection.
TRAI has sought the comments by September 30, 2019, and set October 07, 2019, as the deadline for counter comments.
