WhatsApp might share its payment feature data with its parent firm, Facebook. Notably, Mark Zuckerberg's Facebook is currently in soup over data breach row globally. WhatsApp payment has been based upon the Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
WhatsApp launched payments on trial basis for some of its users in February. However, the service is expected to be rolled out for all of its users soon.
A report in Hindustan Times, quoted one of the clauses of WhatsApp policy, it read, "We share information with third-party providers and services to help us operate and improve Payments... To send payment instructions to PSPs (payment service providers), maintain your transaction history, provide customer support, and keep our Services safe and secure, including to detect, prevent, or otherwise address fraud, safety, security, abuse, or other misconduct, we share information we collect under this Payments Privacy Policy with third-party service providers including Facebook."
“To provide Payments to you, we share information with third-party services including PSPs, such as your mobile phone number, registration information, device identifiers, VPAs (virtual payments addresses), the sender’s UPI PIN, and payment amount,” it further added.
WhatsApp clause is breaching the NPCI's order which stated that the banks associated with third-party payment apps like WhatsApp and PhonePe need to get exclusive permission from NPCI before they share customer data.
NPCI or the National Payments Council of India (NPCI) is the body that oversees the UPI platform.
At present, WhatsApp payment service is for selected WhatsApp beta users on iOS and Android.
The new ‘Payments’ feature can be accessed from the Chat window in the Attachments menu. You can then click on Payments, which will then prompt you to link to your UPI. GizmoTimes points out that users who haven’t made a UPI account earlier will have to head to a UPI app or the bank’s website respectively.
Currently, WhatsApp has a customer base of around 200 million users, due to which experts believe that if the payment feature will go live, that will be the much needed punch to the digital transactions in the country.
Recently, Facebook-owned WhatsApp has rolled out ‘WhatsApp Business’ in India for Android users. The app is now available for download on the Google Play Store. At the moment, the app is not available for iOS users but is expected to arrive soon.
