Petrol price breaches Rs 80 mark in Mumbai

Petroleum prices on Monday breached the Rs 80 mark in Mumbai. According to Indian Oil website, a litre of petrol cost Rs 80.10 in Mumbai. In Kolkata it cost Rs 74.94 and marginally less Rs 74.91 in Chennai. In capital New Delhi, a litre of petroleum is available for Rs 72.23.

On Sunday, responding to a query,Union Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan said the spike in petrol rates in the international market has impacted the cost of the fuel in India. "Besides, the state governments too levy cess on petrol," he said.

Union Oil Minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Sunday said his Ministry is trying to bring petrol and diesel under the purview of the Goods and Services Tax (GST). "We are trying that petrol, diesel and kerosene should also come under the ambit of GST. We are hopeful that the GST Council will agree to it shortly," the Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister told reporters in Ujjain. The Congress had demanded that petroleum projects be brought under the GST ambit.

In Indore, Pradhan rode a bicycle at "Saksham Cyclothon" to send the message of save fuel and environment. The Petroleum Conservation Research Association (PCRA) and the Indore Cycling Association (ICA) claimed that nearly 30,000 cyclists participated in the event.On the occasion, Pradhan said cycling promotes healthy life and helps in conservation of energy.

In last GST Council meeting, there was speculation that the matter will be discussed. However it couldn't be taken up for consideration. Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley assured that the issue of petroleum products being included under GST may be discussed in the next meeting. No date so far has been fixed for the meeting.

Petrol pump owners in Punjab today threatened to go on an indefinite hunger strike from tomorrow to press for reduction in taxes on petrol and diesel and also said that smuggling of petroleum products was causing massive loss to them.

Addressing a press conference here, Petrol Pump Dealers' Association of Punjab President Paramjit Singh Doaba said, "If the Punjab government does not heed to their demands, they will intensify their protest by shutting down petrol pumps across the state. We have submitted numerous representations to the government, but it has turned a deaf ear to our pleas, leaving us with no choice but to resort to an agitation.
