WHO chief scientist urges India's govt to report 'actual Covid-19 numbers'

Geneva [Switzerland], May 11 (ANI): As India is in the grasp of a devastating second wave of COVID-19, World Health Organisation (WHO) Chief Scientist Soumya Swaminathan on Monday (local time) termed the rate of infections and deaths in the country as worrying and called on governments to boost exercises on reporting actual numbers.

In an exclusive interview with ANI, Swaminathan said that the projections of one million deaths by August projected by the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME) are based on models and available data, which are not predictions of the future and can be changed.

Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia on Monday said the Delhi Government had ordered 1.34 crore doses of COVID vaccines in May but the Centre cleared only 3.5 lakh doses against it.

Briefing the mediapersons, the Deputy Chief Minister said, Today BJP alleged that Delhi Government ordered only 5.50 lakh doses of vaccine. The Government of India had decided in April that the two companies can sell vaccines to states directly, states were also intimated the same. We ordered 1.34 crore doses for Delhi for people above 18 years.
