The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday stayed the conviction of Rahul Gandhi in a 2019 defamation case over his Modi surname remark. A bench comprising Justices B R Gavai, P S Narasimha and P V Sanjay Kumar said the trial court did not give any particular reasons for imposing a punishment of two years imprisonment on Gandhi.

"Considering the aforesaid and particularly that no reasons have been given by the trial judge for a maximum sentence which has incurred disqualification, order of conviction needs to stay during pendency of proceedings," the Court said, as quoted by Bar and Bench.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Friday claimed that India under the Modi government has added only 12.2 lakh formal jobs in the past five years, and said that for the survival of the poor and middle class, the BJP needs to be "thrown out of power".

Kharge charged that the BJP has "miserably failed" to provide employment.

The National Capital Territory of Delhi of Delhi (Amendment) Bill, 2023 was passed by the Lok Sabha on Thursday as the monsoon session of the Parliament wrapped up for the day. It was introduced in the Lok Sabha by Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

The bill replaces the Delhi services ordinance. It seeks to dilute the powers of the Delhi government over services.

Air India's total accumulated losses at the end of the financial year 2022-23 (FY23) have been estimated at Rs 14,000 crore, According to a report by The Economic Times (ET). Sources were quoted as saying that Tata Sons invested about Rs 13,000 crore in Air India in FY23 through wholly owned subsidiary Talace.
