In the wake of violent protests in Murshidabad district over the new Waqf law, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Saturday said that her government will not implement it in the state. She also appealed for peace while visiting the violence-hit areas of the district.

"We have made our position clear on this matter – we do not support this law. This law will not be implemented in our state. So what is the riot about?" Mamata Banerjee posted on X (formerly Twitter), addressing public outrage.

Leader of Opposition in West Bengal Assembly and BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari on Friday raised concerns over what he described as "large-scale violence, anarchy, and lawlessness" in the state, attributing it to protests by a group he called "radicals" opposing the Constitution and law of the land.

The White House has said that a new round of steep US tariffs on Chinese goods — initiated under President Donald Trump — took effect on Thursday (April 10), bringing the total additional duties on certain items to 145 per cent.
