US tax evasion: Swiss bank pleads guilty; fined $2.6 bn

Swiss banking giant Credit Suisse has pleaded guilty to the charges that it helped its American clients evade taxes and agreed to pay a penalty of USD 2.6 billion to avoid prosecution.

The Swiss bank plea follows a years-long investigation by US law enforcement authorities that also produced indictments of eight Credit Suisse executives since 2011; two of them have pleaded guilty so far.

Seventeen commuters died and 32 others were injured when a Srinagar-bound 48-seater bus skidded off the road and rolled down the slope into a 300 feet deep rivulet near Digdol on Jammu-Srinagar National Highway early on Tuesday.

Ramban Superintendent of Police Javed Iqbal Matoo told The Hindu that the accident took place at 2.15 a.m. when the bus was on way to Srinagar from Jammu.

WASHINGTON: Calling India a "very important strategic partner", the US hopes that its "enduring partnership" with India will only grow under the new government led by Narendra Modi despite the flap over his visa.
