India Inc faces uphill task in meeting Sebi norms on women directors

Ahead of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (Sebi)’s October 1 deadline for all listed companies to have at least one woman on their boardof directors, more than half the National Stock Exchange (NSE)-listed firms are yet to comply.

Currently, of 1,469 companies listed on NSE, 755 are yet to appoint a woman on their boards.

NHAI to tighten norms for claiming damages

To reduce disputes, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) plans to tighten the norms under which builders claim compensation or damages from the government. According to the proposed change in norms, NHAI would allow road developers to claim damages arising out of an unforeseen event only within a period of 30 days.

Currently, road developers can knock the door of NHAI any time after the award of the contract, as there is no restriction on time period.

Mumbai: India’s biggest state-owned company Oil and Natural Gas Corp. Ltd (ONGC) has omitted its controversial tiff with Reliance Industries Ltd (RIL) from its annual report for 2013-14.

ONGC had claimed that the private player had been drawing gas from its adjoining hydrocarbon block in the Krishna-Godavari (KG) basin. This had been one of the most controversial developments of the last fiscal, which saw ONGC lock horns with RIL over the issue. It took RIL to court in May this year along with the Directorate General of Hydrocarbons (DGH), the upstream regulator, and the government of India.

Bajaj Auto on Tuesday reported 8 per cent increase in total sales in August at 3,36,840 units as against 3,12,188 units in the same month last year.

Motorcycle sales during the month stood at 2,84,302 units as against 2,78,583 units in August 2013, the company said in a statement.

Canadian handset maker BlackBerry today said it has partnered telecom services firm Idea Cellular to offer one GB data plan to its customers.

Idea Cellular postpaid services users with BlackBerry OS 7 devices would be able to avail BlackBerry Internet Service (BIS) 1 GB 2G plan at Rs 83 per month with an annual rental plan of Rs 999 (taxes extra), BlackBerry said in a statement.

Falling for the fourth straight day, the rupee today weakened by another 11 paise to 60.64 against the US currency in early trade at the Interbank Foreign Exchange market due to dollar's gains against other rivals overseas.

Forex dealers said besides dollar's gains against other currencies, increased demand for the American unit from importers put pressure on the rupee, but a higher opening in the domestic equity market limited the losses.
