Ten captive coal mines with total annual production capacity estimated at 106 million tonnes (mt) would have translated into assured fuel supply for thermal power giant NTPC. However, despite being at several levels of clearance and approvals for years, none of these is operational.
NTPC lost five of its mines allotted to it in a Supreme Court judgment dated August 2014. The judgment cancelled all coal block allocations made over two decades. Chatti-Bariatu & Chatti-Bariatu (South), Kerandari in Jharkhand, Dulanga in Odisha and Talaipalli in Chhattisgarh were re-allocated to NTPC last year in an e-auction.

Indian Railways has withdrawn the 10 percent port congestion surcharge with immediate effect in order to attract imported freight traffic including containers, coal, iron ore etc (which are presently diverted to road). The decision, first announced in this year’s Railway Budget, is one of the significant steps in the direction of rationalisation of freight rate structure initiated by the Railways.
This was a pending demand of the ministries of shipping and ports, steel, container operators and other industries. “The move will be a big boost to national industrial growth. The surcharge withdrawn was 10 percent on basic freight and its withdrawal will generate additional incremental traffic,” said the Ministry of Railways in a press release.

Mahindra & Mahindra expects tractor sales to grow in double digits this year, if monsoon forecasts are proved right. The company, which met analysts earlier this week, said that tractor sales could grow 10 per cent in FY17, if the rainfall is normal this season. The tractor segment, which has declined for two consecutive years, could see some recovery due to pent-up demand in the system. Tractor sales have declined 13 per cent in FY15 and 10 per cent in FY16. Emkay Global, in a note, says: "After a successful launch of the Arjun brand tractors in the 50+hp range, the management is hopeful the recent launch of the 30-50 hp Yuvo range should further help market share."
